problem with startup on MacPro G5

My computer has for the past couple of weeks been freezing upon wake up.  The desktop appears and looks fine but if I click on anything I get the non-stop spinning rainbow colored wheel.  I have waited for over an hour to see if it resolves, but no luck.  I have to press the power button to restart.

Then most of the time as the computer restarts I get the ?mark flashing folder and it won't get any further beyond that.  If I keep restarting I do eventually get the apple logo and start up is fine after that.  I just have to try not to let the computer sleep.

I have restarted pressing commandR and gone into utilities to select my startup disk and then restarting and I think it restarted ok but this did not solve the problem permanently.

I reinstalled the operating system software- Mavericks 10.9.5, but problem persists.

I have a mac pro G5 and it's been running great for on mavericks for a couple of years.

I hope somebody can help me with this...

You don't have a G5 as it would not run 10.9.

if you can get to the OS  you may download post an Etrecheck report which will help the volunteers here with determining some of the causes of your dilemma
