Upgrade to Sierra = endless spinning beachball

I just upgraded both my iMac and my MacBook to from Mountain Lion to Sierra.  The upgrade went smoothly but the result has been a disaster on both computers.  Everything is now incredibly slow and I constantly get the spinning beachball.  Prior to doing the upgrade both computers worked well.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Do I need to take the units into my local Genius Bar?

Note that before doing the upgrade I did verify that both computers exceed Apple's stated requirements.
