iTunes 11: "Movies" vs. "Home Videos"

So when in the "Movies" section of iTunes, there are views including Unwatched, Genres, Movies, Home Videos, and List. I want to move some video content from "Home Videos" to "Movies". How do I do this?

I figured it out:

 

Select one or more movies in your collection. Choose Get Info. Select the Options tab and change Media Kind to Movie. The modified items will alphabetically show under Movies when you are in the Movies section of iTunes 11.

If you have a great many titles, you can also accomplish this in Finder.  Both folders - Home Videos and Movies are located in

 

iTunes/iTunes Music/Home Videos

or

iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies

 

Simply highlight those files that you want to move from one folder and drag them to the other folder.

Note that in iTunes 11, it's probably an oversight that you can't target "home videos" in smart playlists.

 

If you edit a smart playlist and try to target Media Kind is/isn't <type>, the offered types are TV shows, movies, etc. but not home videos. Therefore you can't build smart playlists that specifically target (or don't target) home videos.

 

Yet. Hopefully they'll fix it in 11.0.1.

It's idiotic. It's completely nonintuitive to correct the mislabeled files via the Get Info menu.

Why not just drag the movies to the 'Home Movies' tab? Must iTunes be incomprehensible?

Thanks for the help Toby; I had the same issues.  As bvidc said, it is not "intuitive.  This is an easy work around, but I, like others, hope it is seamless in the iTunes 11 udates!

iTunes 11 is just terrible; its nonintuitive. Having to log into apple discussions to answer this question is pathetic. I am embarresed I had to get here. I even had spent time in the get info, but missed the "Options" tab. Thanks to the users to explain this. Where Steve to berate the itunes 11 team?

Was that last question sarcastic? You know Steve died, right? RIP Steve!

IMO: iTunes is Apple's biggest blunder since they rehired Jobs in [whatever year that was]. Apple's whole deal is that out stuff is easy to understand and use. Then there's iTunes: a mess of a UI that is only rivaled in the category of "worst UI ever" by Lotus Notes (which looks like it was designed by a monkey banging on the keyboard and mouse).

Thank you - this was the instant solution for multiple files- I had 500+ home movies listed in "movies" - your solution helped me fix it in seconds.

I learned something tonight - if you don't have "Copy files to iTunes Media foler..." chosen, and add a video to iTunes, then you can't change the media kind.  So if you are storing videos on an external, good luck!

 

I'm sure there's a solution to this dilemma, but I don't know what that is right now.

I have MPEG-4 videos under home movies in my itunes on PC.  Under get info, options, the choice to change media kind is greyed out  Please help. I want to move to movies so that I can sync with ipad

NMdocPV, this could be the case if your movies are located outside your iTunes library folder. (Some people switch off the pref to automatically copy new additions to the iTunes library folder, and they still work in iTunes, but then you can't alter many of their tags.) Perhaps this is the case with you?

for some reason when i add home videos to my music playlist it shows up on the playlist on itunes but when i sync the playlist to my phone the vidoes dont show up in the playlist. is this a software issue or am i doing something wrong never had this problem in till the last itunes update?
