You can’t. You can put it to sleep by using the sleep/wake/power button, but if you cannot slide to shut down, you can’t power off.

Thanks for the reply, I’ve just managed to do it, you have to hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button for 10-15 seconds. When you see the Apple logo, you can let go of both buttons and allow the iPad to reboot.

Apple advised me on this and it’s all working again now.

I understand this only re-boots it and it doesn’t turn it off but that was what I was trying to do as my touch screen stopped working

OK. But that wasn’t what you asked. Furthermore, what you did, did not turn the iPad off, it rebooted the device. If the touch screen doesn’t work, you cannot turn the device off.
