Updating podcasts before syncing

Itunes.   When I sync my iphone and ipad the podcasts don't seem to be up to date.  I select "include 10 most recent episodes from selected podcasts."  But, for example OnPoint, and other shows, show episodes that are a month or more old.  How can I update the list before syncing/
