Mail disconnects from Exchange

I am using Mail version 10.3 on Sierra 10.12.6.

I use Mail to connect to my work email by Exchange. I do this on my Android phone with no problem. However, when using Mail, sometimes it just drops the connection after it has been left idle. For example I will leave my Mac and come back to it half an hour later and find that the mailbox has not updated. Sometimes several new emails which already came through on my Android phone for this email account do not show on Mac Mail. I click 'get new messages' in the top left, and in the bottom left the 'checking for mail' status displays and gets stuck on it. I have to force quit Mac Mail and reopen it, and then it connects to the email account just fine. But then the same thing happens again.

I had a similar problem when using Outlook for Mac, although in those cases it used to ask me to reenter my password every time, which Mac Mail does not.

What is causing this?
