spell check as I type stopped working

"spell check as I type" stopped working on all apps.

My poor eyesight produces many typos.

Running High Sierra on a mid-2010 iMac.

Edit Menu options properly checkmarked.

Problem may have begun with 'low' Sierra.

However, there appears to be a long history of this well before Sierra.
