macbook pro boots to messed up fuzzy screen, do...

I connected a gigaware mini display port to my trusty 17" MacBook Pro late 2011. And I connected an external monitor via HDMI. at first it video mirrored, then I unchecked video mirroring and my screen went totally haywire, all fuzzy with strange colors. So I rebooted and tried various fixes: zapping the PRam (multiple times). Even resetting the SMC. I tried booting in safe mode and i see the apple, but all blurry double vision-like. I booted in single user mode and can see the terminal, but it's impossible to read cause it's all out of whack with fuzzy colors. I tried deleting the window server settings by carefully typing, not sure I did it properly but it did not work. Every thing else about the computer seems to work just fine, ie. caplocks light comes on, computer responds to keyboard input, power button, etc. Just the display is totally messed up. (Well, actually not totally find because it won't fully boot.) I'm running El Capitan.

Could I have physically harmed the display circuitry? Or could this be solved by some software reset process?

Unfortunately, it's not inconceivable that your MacBook Pro has experienced a hardware failure not related to you connecting the mini display port. Since you have already tried most of the basic troubleshooting steps, I would suggest that you make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store to have them take a look.

The only other option, if you can make out anything on the display is try to perform an Apple Hardware Test to verify anything amiss before making the appointment.

I experience the same problem with macOS Sierra 10.12.6. Have never connected any hardware to it.

Did you find a solution for this? Running macOS Sierra 10.13 and just started having a similar issue. Upon boot up, screen goes into weird lines and color shift then Apple logo and loading bar appear and everything seems to go normal except my external monitor (Dell U2415), which I haven't had any issues with until this issue occurred, will only work intermittently sighting that no input is connected.
