Slow read rate of external USB 3.0 blu ray drive

I have recently purchased an external blu ray drive, model BDR-XD05S, and it is getting 500K/s read rate during playback of Blu Rays or DVDs connected to my Macbook Pro.  The same drive will get 20M/s on a different Windows 10 computer, and using the same Macbook Pro but reading from an Ubuntu Virtual Box guest OS gets 20M/s read rate.

This is obviously a software/driver problem of some sort with OS X, yet my searches of both Pioneer's and Apple's forums have yielded very little.  Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a solution yet?
