Backup Deleting

iOS 10.12.6 Macbook Air.

I have been backing up my computer on an external hard drive using Time Machine. I was wondering if I can delete the old back ups and if so how do I do this? I am not a computer genius but if you can explain I'm sure I can understand. Thanks!
