Setting up Gmail on Apple Mail

Just brought home my first mac ever, macbook pro 13" retina. In the apple store the sales guy set up gmail through the apple mail program, but we didn't actually check it. All I had to do was add account and sign in with my google info. i've just tried to send an email now and get this error message:

Cannot send message using server Google

The sender address  was rejected by the server smtp.gmail.com.

The server response was: Authentication Required. Learn more athttps://support.google.com/mail/answer/14257 u14sm135893043pfi.58 - gsmtp

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

I've never had a mac before so I'm not super confident in playing around with it. I've had a look at the account settings through apple mail and can't really change anything.

If I click Connection Doctor it connects fine, and says:

Connection to server succeeded; login not required

All the instructions I can find by googling tell me it should do auto setup it all when I add account and sign in through google.

Does anyone have any tips for a mac noob? Much appreciated.

In Mail,

  1. select Preferences -> Accounts.
  2. Select your Gmail account
  3. click on Account Information.
  4. Select "Edit SMTP Server List..." from the dropdown next to "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)".

Ensure that the settings match the following:

  • Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
    • imap.gmail.com
    • Port: 993
    • Requires SSL:Yes
  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
    • smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 465 or 587
    • Requires SSL: Yes
    • Requires authentication: Yes
    • Use same settings as incoming mail server
  • Full Name or Display Name: [your name]
  • Account Name or User Name: your full Gmail address (username@gmail.com). Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
  • Email address: your full Gmail address (username@gmail.com) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
  • Password: your Gmail password

Gmail suddenly stopped working after being fine for the last year.  My dialog no longer looks like the above.

Mail > Window > Connection Doctor

click on any red light and it will take you directly to the setup for that Email Sending Server or Email Receiving Server (yes, there are two, and each can screw up independently).

I also just noticed today that I can't send Gmail from Mail app. SMTP servers aren't connecting. Maybe a problem with Google?

After poking around I discovered Google had posted an administrative message indicating that my account had been logged out, along with a set of others, as part of an administrative update.  I have two factor authentication set up, and an application-password for the account.  When I created a new application password, Apple Mail repeated rejected it.  After puzzling over this for a while, I eventually entered the regular (two-factor) password and the passcode from my Google Authenticator iOS app.  That seems to have fixed the problem.  Perhaps Apple no longer accepts application passwords?
