Itunes won't let me play .M4r songs, so I can't...

Hi,

So I recently download Itunes 10.5.1 so I could use my new Iphone 3Gs with it. I read a few articles about how you could make custom ringtones by converting a song to AAC and then changing the ending to .m4r and then playing the song in Itunes.

However, whenever I try to do this in Itunes, it doesn't give me the option to "Create AAC Version". Instead, I get the option to "Create MP3 Version". I tried this, and it seemed to work. I got a 14 second clip of a song, dragged it to the desktop, then turned the clip into a "m4r". However, when I click to play the ringtone, nothing happens. Itunes won't even play it. I guess this is their way of restricting users from making ringtones, which is kind of ridiculous. Is there any way I can work around this?

What format is your original ringtone?

1.)  If you are asked to create MP3 then do that.

2.) After create MP3 do it again this time to create AAC format.

Now you can change the extension to m4r.

Original formation is just a regular mp3. And I tried doing step 2) of what you said, but it doesn't let me change it to AAC format!

Download a free song from iTunes for testing. See if it works.

Did you update iTunes?

yes, just did it today. I have version 10.5.1

You are much too quick Try download a free song frrom iTunes for testing and see if that works.

that did not work either

You are sure you did it correctly?

Here are the steps:

1. Select a title (.mp3) in your iTunes Library

2. Do File > Get Info on selected title

3. In the dialog choose Options tab

4. Set Start Time and End Time (no more than 35 secs otherwise won't work)

5. Close dialog.

6. Now control click the title (right click) and choose Create AAC Version

7. Delete the newly create title. (no worries here)

8. Open the Trash, rename the title from ringtone.m4a to ringtone.m4r

9. Drag it out of trash into iTunes

Now you have a ringtone.

No kidding....?? All of this to create a ringtone? On a Droid you can drop and drag......come on Apple, this is ridiculous.

Perhaps you should enjoy your droid and quit bringing 4 year old posts to the top simply to complain...

I am having the same issue...FRUSTRATING!!!!!

Itunes 12 will not give me the option to create an AAC version of the song. Only MP3.

What can I do to make these ringtones please?

IiTunes prefs > General.

Click the import settings button and set it to AAC.

Chris you are a legend fella!!!! They need to bottle your blood. Thanks heaps it worked.

When I tried this, it keeps saying it is a "protected file" and cannot be converted to an AAC file!

Frustrating!
