still having problems with sorting playlists
I asked these questions a couple weeks ago with no response.
1. I am trying to create a playlist using the latest version of ITunes that is similar to the Today's Hit Music playlist I set up earlier this summer. The 90s music playlist that came with ITunes and this playlist work fine. However, any new playlists created since the upgrade to ITunes 11 do not. In the above scenario where I set up a playlist that only has one rule and that rule is year is greater than whatever, ITunes refuses to sort the playlist by year then by artist, instead sorting the entire playlist by artist. My Today's Hit Music playlist, on the other hand, sorts with the year on top, so every song that I have allowed in the playlist is sorted by year. For example, B.O.B, Pitbull, Taio Cruz and Usher have songs from 2010 in the playlist. Their songs are all sorted alphabetically by artist, then by album as they should be. Then Pitbull, New Boys, and Hot Chelle Ray all have songs from 2011. Under the old system, these would be right below the songs from 2010, but in the new system they are mixed in with the 2010 songs, so Pitbull could have 2 songs back to back that did not come out in the same year. How can I fix this?
2. I have a playlist set up for songs that are not in any other playlist. I had to recreate this playlist the last time I reset my plays because my phone wouldn't remove the songs that were added to the playlist since its creation from the list when it was supposed to. Now however, I am having the same problem with it as I was having with the last playlist. With the old system before ITunes 11, if What I Want by Daudtrey was the first song in that playlist, it would always be the first song, creating a sound that sounded like it was on shuffle, which I thought was cool. Now, it just sorts alphabetically by artist regardless of when it was played. How can I tell ITunes to not rearrange this playlist and just add all new songs to the end?
I posted this 2 weeks ago and still no response? Please help someone! I created a playlist today with a rule year is greater than 1956 and it just sorted everything by artist, how do I tell ITunes to sort this playlist by year? Also, I playes several songs yesterday, so naturally they were moved from not played to not in playlist, but it resorted the playlist, putting the songs where they go by album and artist, rather than just adding to the end. How cna I change this behavior?
Do you have "Year" in your Songs header?
If not, right click the header line and add "Year"
If so, click on the word "Year" to sort accending, click again to sort decending, click again to not sort by year.
Using only the keyboard, how do I use the header? I know there are a few songs that don't have year info, but I am slowly fixing that. How about my other question?
I don't know how to do this without using a mouse point.
This may help, https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000542.htm
As for question #2, you call tell how iTunes is sorting songs by the up or down arrow next to a header name.
Even the original order that the songs were entered or date added or last played can be sorted.
Much easier with a mouse or touch pad.
Thanks, I'll try that. Hmm wonder if this might actually help me with my Excel projects? If anyone has a solution for this problem that uses the keyboard, do not hesitate to post here!
Still no luck. How can I do this? I've tabbed around and looked through all the menus and do not find anything that says reorder playlist! All I see is edit smart playlist which takes me back to the dialog box that the playlist was created from.
To sort, click on a word in the playlist header itself. When you see this header, it will be above your list of songs. It wiil have words such as "Name" "Artist" "Album"
To see the header use the side bar on the left and select a playlist.
And after all this I just discovered that there is also a "View Options..." under"View" in the iTunes 11 menu bar. This is a great feature.
We learn something new everyday.
I don't think it is possible to adjust the column used for sorting without a mouse or some form of pointer. Have you tried MouseKeys? I've just managed to use it to resize columns and reorder in iTunes.

We do indeed learn something new every day. That view options helped, and I think might have solved my first question, but as I don't keep a playlist covering all decades around, I will have to try that. However, I don't quite know how to keep my current order. Any idea how to keep the current playlist order, but have ITunes add songs in the order they are played?
All playlists should retain their order. For All Music, you will just have to try it. Since I don't sort my full Music list this way, this "Manual Order" thing is just a random sorted list of songs on my system.
Thanks Jim! Somehow, I managed to get it working the way I want for the most part. Now I have a different problem though, I somehow added a bunch of other things to the sort order that I can't seem to remove. Here's what I have now, Playlist position, track name, artist name, album name, genre, rating if there is one, plays, last played, and last skipped. How do I get rid of the last two items so they don't show in my playlist?
I've already spent enough time on this tonight, and I have to get to some homework, but I think I'm on the right track now, thanks for your help Jim and keep an eye on this thread if I have to come back here with anymore questions.
You have to right click the header line and remove the header names you do not want.
You can also do this by View/View options...
I merely want to sort my playlists but it seems one needs to be an engineer to do that!
