Extremely Slow Finder Functions
I upgraded to macOS Sierra a couple of days ago and I've noticed some extreme slowdowns in certain tasks:
1. Moving a file (~200k) from 1 folder to another on the Desktop can take 20-30 seconds - I routinely see a window that says 'Preparing to move filename' in the upper right corner.
2. Opening/Saving files in pretty much any program (although Adobe Illustrator CC 2015.3 is even slower!) - It can take 45 sec to a minute just to see the Open/Save dialog after I press Command-O or Command-S.
3. Application Not Responding messages on many programs (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, The Unarchiver, MS Word, etc.) I've lost count of the number of times I've Force-Quit and Rebooted in the last 2 days.
I'm running a 17-inch, Late 2011, MacBook Pro with 16Gb RAM and a 1Tb SS Hard Drive. (And I am linked to a Dropbox for Business account for work - I need to access this a lot for the files that I use.)
Any ideas on what I can do to speed things up a bit? Or should I just downgrade beck to El Capitan?
Thanks!
Hey there, RonP317!
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. After reading your post, I am understanding that your Mac is running slower than expected after updating to macOS Sierra. I rely on my Mac every day, so I know it's important for it to respond quickly. I'm happy to help!
First, try restarting your Mac by clicking the Apple menu and selecting Restart... from the drop down. After the computer boots up, test how it performs.
If it is still running slowly, the next thing I would recommend is taking a look at the following article.
macOS Sierra: If your Mac runs slowly
Next, you can restart in safe mode if the issue continues. The article linked below will give you some information on safe mode, and help you boot to it.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Even though the title of the article isn't specific to your issue, safe mode is still a good step to try. It will run a scan of your system during boot, and will also disable certain software and processes that could be causing a conflict. After testing in safe mode, make note of the system's performance and restart the computer again.
If the issue continues after testing in safe mode, the next thing I suggest is testing the performance in another user account. The following article will give you information on why testing in another user is a helpful step, as well as provide instructions on setting up a new user.
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac
Have a great day!
Ok friends,
I was looking around for solutions on this and similar issues for a long time. I was facing these issues (mentioned below) on my MAcBook PRO. Did countless things, but no effect.
Today, I updated my macOS to 10.12.1 and was hoping, that this new update will resolve my issues. Still no effect.
Many people were talking about 'Google drive' is creating such problems. Even my twitter chat with support, they mentioned about the same checkpoint. So, I deleted the app and all. Still no effect.
I am mentioning my issues here again for your information.
- Finder is freezes / colour wheel is spinning and taking enormous time to bring a popup while I am attaching a file (even if it is a drag drop) from any email client. Even with Gmail in browser.
- Same behaviour, when I am trying to opening a file from any application (like Keynote, Pages etc.)
- When, I am dragging a file from one finder tab to another, it is freezing and taking time to make the action.
- While deleting and /or moving file one folder to another.
- Taking time to show directory listing in a finder (only some times).
This is what finally worked for me.
(Please do it at your own risk. I am not an expert for sure.)
- I disconnected all the accounts (including Twitter, Facebook etc.) from my 'Internet Accounts' menu.
- System Preferences > Internet Accounts
- Select each account you have.
- Click on - sign at the bottom left corner of the box (it will delete the account from mac)
- macOS will ask you many questions, do the needful as per your requirements.
- Follow this tutorial. Link mentioned below.
- Restart your computer/Laptop.
- Hopefully, you are over with the problems.
In my view, disconnecting all the cloud accounts (including Twitter, Facebook etc.) from 'Internet Accounts' menu and then restarting is solving the problem.
Do post your feedbacks for more insight. Thank you all.
Also having this problem. Start up takes up to 10 minutes. Gets stuck in finder 5+ minutes. Finder occasionally freezes and have to hard reset. Launching programs in dock just bounce in the dock and never launch. Have to force quit. Can not open system preferences at all. Finally got Illustrator to launch - but not from the dock - from the application in the application folder. Took around 10 + minutes to launch Illustrator. Opening a file I was working on took another 5 minutes. Once the file was open experienced constant lags and spinning beach ball to do very basic things (copy items, move items, edit text). If I was working on a big illustration I would not be able to get anything done so basically the computer is non-functional from a work standpoint. I have about 70% free space - will try to move all files to external drive and restart.
Hours of wasted time. So frustrating. Anyone know how to go back to el Capitan?
Thank you so much! I have been searching for a solution like this for months. I was preparing to cough up $50 and bring my computer in... Having gone through the cloudd and cloudmetadata procedure a variety of different ways and times to no avail, I can say with confidence that that the solution is in the Internet accounts reset. Now back to enjoying a fast Mac!
Thank you for this! I was also having very slow file / finder issues. I just deleted the iCloud internet account and its already working MUCH better...
Thanks for this. I am still using El Capitan, due to very expensive software that I will have to upgrade with Sierra, and the same problem exists. I have been deleting the 'cloudd' process though with increasingly less effect. I removed Facebook only (not email accounts if anyone is wondering) and immediately the columns populated very quickly.
On a related note, if you are experiencing the incredibly annoying lag when creating a new tag, after 18 months I found the answer. I have over 1,100 tags (don't ask, I'm organized) and each new tag automatically lists in the sidebar. As this list grows, the time to create a new tag increases which for me was about 20-30 seconds of spinning beachball frustration. I also save many PDF's from the reader view in Safari and tagging them via the save dialogue was the same; the lag lasted for 40-60 seconds in Safari.
The solution is to open Finder Preferences and select TAGS. Uncheck every Tag except for one (so the Tags designation remains in the sidebar for easy access). As you delete these, this process speeds up until finally a new tag is nearly instantaneous. You can mouse over the circle to the left of each tag to add a color as well.
Thanks! You are the one. More helpful than calling AppleCare service
THANKS A LOT MATE.
Hi @Ronp317,
I was having the same problem, when I came across another site that had the solution that fixed my problem. Just turn off iCloud on your device. It worked for me. When I turned it back on, the problem didn't come back, I just cut down what i was sharing across my devices to what was absolutely necessary. As far as I can see this has worked. If the problem returns, I am just going to turn off iCloud for good and use another system.
I hope this helps!
Shaa.
Dear fellows,
Of course this is all a solution for one minute.
I did all your suggestions, and every time again the Finder was still slow at the end or the next day.
And yes, my computer is clean etc.
But in 2017 ... do we really have to repeat and repeat and repeat all those tips and tricks, so we can work properly?
So our question is:
dear Apple, why are you not fixing the system?
It costs us a lot of hard earned money! So it isn't funny anymore.
Isn't it, folks?
I followed all of these to no avail. Has anyone else had any luck with this? Mine just started slowing down today for some reason.
Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.
Thanks for the tips. I started following your process and found that my iCloud Drive was turned on. I turned it off completely and found that this alone fixed the slow functionality of Finder. Just wanted to throw that out there for people in case it helps them too. Thanks.
I was having similar problems that seemed to be related to iCloud and the 'cloudd' daemon. OSXDaily's instructions did not work for me, but logging out of iCloud, as you suggest did help. Thanks!
