How to back up iMessages?

I’m switching from the 6s to the 8+ and can’t get my messages back.

iMessages are backed up in a standard iCloud or iTunes iOS backup.

Assuming you are using the same Apple ID and cellular carrier in the same country as the iPhone 6S, and assuming you are using iTunes 12.7 or later if you use iTunes to perform the backup, the iMessages that existed when the iPhone 6S backup was created should move to the new iPhone.
