Gray dotted circle on moved to iPhone tracks "f...

Hi Folks,

So I've been an iTunes user for about 10 years, and have a library of about 35K songs stored on an External Thunderbolt SSD, running on my MBPr 2016. Within the past couple years, I've noticed that sometimes my iTunes won't push songs over to my iPhone when I ask it to (I have iTunes set to "Manually Manage Music & Playlists"). I'll drag some tracks over to my iPhone, wait for it to copy, and the transaction allegedly finishes, but when I check my phone through iTunes, a bunch of those tracks have the gray dotted circle next to them. Sometimes I can force it to properly sync if changing some metadata on a track or two temporarily, or manually sync it about 10-15 times, but it doesn't always work well.

Now, when I search for solutions on this issue, basically I'm told that I need to recreate my iTunes Library, to clean out the cruft or corruption from managing a library for so long, and when I recreate it the issue with my phone should disappear. Not sure if this is the proper resolution or not, but it seems like it'd make sense if there's a corruption issue with my library trying to communicate with my phone.

So, being technologically literate (Apple IT manager), I get the gist of the issue, and know what I need to recreate for my library to (hopefully) function properly.

The issue I'm facing is that, evidently, the Date Added metadata is stored within that selfsame iTunes library that I need to recreate. Since I have almost forty thousand songs, I'd like to keep my "recent additions" recent, so I don't have to go searching for all the new albums I added this month.

I'm not a stickler for "Play Count" and I barely rate anything (though I have started <3'ing tracks since they've instituted it; not a big deal if I lose it), but managing the library chronologically is for some reason SUPER important to me.

First, I'm seeing that my earliest "Date Added" is in 2011, I believe after I lost my backup and had to recreate manually. Would a 7 year old library be corrupted so easily?

Second, if I do recreate the library, will that guarantee that the "dotted circle"/not copying issue is resolved?

Lastly, after creating a new library file, is there a way to preserve the "date added" metadata? I know that information is stored in the .itl database file, but I don't know how to port that out of that file and recreate it in the new .itl I'll be making. I have yet to see if there's a Doug's iTunes Script that may be able to export this (that's my next stop after I post), but I'd like to keep that data if at all possible.

Anyway, all I'm looking for honestly is to just have iTunes move my d*mn music over to my phone, so if I don't have to go through this whole rigamarole I'm all for it, but I'd like to not destroy my historical metadata if I can avoid it.

Anyone have any sage words of wisdom that may be able to help with this issue?

Thanks!

You shouldn't need to rebuild the iTunes library, and I don't think it helps anyway.

Try the following all-purpose steps for dealing with erratic device or sync behaviour. They assume that all of the content you want on the device is in your library ready for restoring. If it isn't see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device first. I would also recommend you copy everything out of the camera roll if you haven't already.

  1. Backup device to iTunes.
  2. Restore as a new device.
  3. Restore the backup you made earlier.

Use an encrypted backup (*) if you want to preserve passwords, Wi-Fi settings, web history and health data where appropriate. I also suggest syncing with a selection of playlists (unless you're using iCloud Music Library) rather than manually adding content as, if nothing else, the process above is easier to do if you ever have to go through it again.

(*) The downside with backup encryption is that if you forget the password when you need it again, which could be years later, you may need to invoke a workaround to turn off encryption as shown in Re: disable encrypted backups, which can only help if your device is in a state that can backup to iCloud.

I have seen other posts that talk about using a third party app to access the raw file system on the device to delete its purchased folder and clear out some other files, but having just tried to use this technique to test it I'm not convinced it is any more efficient.

It's unclear if the issue resides Library side or phone side, but doing a new factory restore, coupled with a restore from my encrypted backup, sounds like a good start. Plus IOS 11 has been wreaking havoc with my iPhone 7, so it's probably for the best anyway.

And I agree on the "purchased" folder. I initially thought this was an issue with purchased items being duplicated on the phone and in my iTunes library, but I'm starting to think that isn't the culprit either, as this is occurring when I try to sync over songs from ripped CD's (but who on their right mind does THAT anymore in 2017?), so unless the purchased songs are causing issues with the sync in general, I don't think that resolves the issue.

I'll try the restore x2, and then get back as to whether that works or not. At this point, I'm ready to try anything to get this d*mn phone to behave itself. Criminitley, it's enough to make you nuke and repave the whole friggin thing.

Thanks for the assist, and the points are yours if it works!
