New iPad Mini 4 fast battery drain

I purchased an iPad Mini 4 five days ago.  It is updated to IOS 11.  The battery is draining extremely fast when in use and it drains when the iPad is asleep.  I am not using a cover that puts it to sleep but am manually putting it to sleep.  Did I purchase a "Lemon"?  What things might be running in the background or when it is asleep?  How can I check this and correct the issue?
