hard disk for early 2011 MBP

i have to replace the hard disc as the apple care center asked me to do after a lost data recovery process. i was at a loss as they did not tell me that after each lost data  recovery process the hard disc is not reusable. i dont know if they dissect the same to recover the data.

any how it was a 500 gb hard disc

how much more capacity hard disc I can again fix in the same like 1 TB etc

please guide

Sorry you had trouble. Hopefully this helps:

1. Recovering the data doesn't ruin the hard drive or make it unusable. It may be that your hard drive is damaged beyond repair. (Maybe the reason you were trying to recover data to begin with?)

2. In replacing the drive, you have lots of options. You can go back with 500 GBs, 1 TB, or you can install one of the Solid State drives that cost more and have less capacity, but make your computer run a lot faster. It's up to you.

Where are you located to get an idea of where to look?

I just replaced a corrupted hard drive on my 2012 non-Retina MBP, which is pretty similar to yours.  You can place almost any 2.5" SATA drive in there.  I wanted a 1TB 7200 RPM HGST drive, but they didn't have it on the shelf so I settled on a 7200 RPM 750 GB WD drive.  They both cost $60 (US) where I got them.

Just as an example if you're in the US, Best Buy has a variety of hard drives and solid state drives that will work.  The least expensive is $40 for a WD 500 GB drive.  The Seagate FireCuda seems like the most interesting one, which is a 1 TB hybrid SSD and hard drive for $66.49.  The true SSDs will be lower capacity and/or cost more.  They will be faster/quieter and will use less power than a hard drive.

The best repair guides I've seen are on iFixit.  Have fun.  This isn't all that difficult, but satisfying when you do it yourself.

thanks for early reply

just to describe the history and various events, my MBP was running nicely with high sierra but froze all of a sudden after few weeks. I had to roll back to sierra but during this process all my data got lost. i again reloaded sierra instead of high sierra as suggested by apple care personnel, the MBP was in good running condition  and after about 2 months i had given the same for lost data recovery to recover important data of my company.

thanks a lot

I am based in India, will go study / go through the provided link and iFixit suggestions.

but the executives at apple care center spoiling my hard disc is intolerable.

Did you try one of the data recovery services? They can be expensive, but if you are losing very important data that you need for your company, it may be a good investment.

I've been using Macs for over 28 years now. Seems like the bigger and faster the drives have gotten, they also don't last as long. I had a similar thing happen just a few years ago. My drive failed and I installed a new one. But some other hardware problem in the computer also destroyed the new drive! In the end my best choice was to throw away a 3 year old Mac laptop and buy a new one. Sometimes that happens.

By the way, I visited India a few years back and really enjoyed it! You have a beautiful country and wonderful people!

Yes I had given the MGP to data recovery center only.

Ok, I hope they can recover your data. God bless you!
