Ethernet connection

Just replaced my old iMac (mid 2011) to the new model Retina 2017 and found that the Ethernet connection does not work like my old Mac did, although my WiFi works fine I'm not too worried. But I can't see what this connection does, as to get a wired connection you have to use a thunderbolt adaptor anyway. I have tried 2 Ethernet cables cat 5 and 6. with no luck.

The information I have found is that if you do use the Ethernet connection you have to reconfigure it so I can't really see the point of it, I would be very interested, if someone could give me a simple explanation.
