iMac does not recognize sd card since upgrade

Hello all,

My iMac no longer shows my SD card on the desktop as it used to.  I can see it in finder, but cannot access it.  It was fine before upgrading to High Sierra.  My external hard drives didn't show up at first either but I've since got them to show on the desktop.  I'm not sure what has been changed and/or turned off since the upgrade, but I cannot find where I can enable it to see my SD card.

What do I need to do?  Thanks.

iMac (Retina 4k, 21.5 inch, 2017)

MacOS High Sierra Version 10.13

if it don't work in finder it could be that the card was corrupted

It showed up in Finder, but not mounted on the desktop as usual.  I rebooted and apparently an update was pending.  It worked after that.  (A corrupt card could also be a concern.  I inserted a card from a different camera and it worked, but any card formatted from this particular camera was having a problem.)
