Moving Photos From iCloud To Mac

I have my iPhone set up so that most of the photos are stored in iCloud to save space. However, when I plug in my iPhone to my Mac, there are no photos I am able to import (I assume because they are on iCloud and not the actual device). How do I import my photos from iCloud onto my computer? I have over 1000 photos that are stored on iCloud and I want to move them to my computer so I can have more space for photo storage when I travel.
