How to output streaming TV show via HDMI

I'm trying to watch Star Trek Discovery using my sound system (Denon AVR-S710W).  I tried connecting my MacBook Pro's HDMI output to the Denon, but got only video.  I have two RCA audio inputs on my Denon, but could not get the Denon to accept sound there from the Mac's headphone output minijack while simultaneously using the HDMI input associated with the RCA jacks. I then hooked up the HDMI for video, and set up a bluetooth pairing for sound.  Then I selected the video from the laptop HDMI to be displayed with the bluetooth sound.  It worked....well, sort of; there was way too much flicker and freeze of the video to watch the show.  Why the flicker when sound is added?  Is this a laptop issue, or an AVR issue?
