Change old HDD to new MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro late 2011. I started having hardware issues (trackpad, keyboard), and the ports are getting obsolete. As the same time, I have some programs that are not longer in the App Store (Aperture, iPhoto).

Do you have any experience in moving the whole HDD to a newer computer? It's going to recognize the new hardware?

Hi,

What Mac are you getting? If it's a Mid 2012 Retina or newer, you cannot physically use the old HD in the newer machine.

If it is a Retina machine, then you can use Migration Assistant to move everything from the old HD to the new: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350

Is your goal to physically move this HDD to a new MacBook Pro or just move it data to the new computer?

I changed my HDD for a SSD 1 TB few years ago, I don't know if the MigrationAssistant would keep my information intact, specially with almost 48,000 photos (295 GB only in photos plus 80 GB of videos). So for me it would be easier just to move the SSD directly to a more recent MacBook Pro.

I was thinking in a MacBook Pro Retina, 13 Inch, mid 2014. I change few years ago the HDD for a SSD.

Actually, Migration Assistant would do just fine copying and restoring these photos to your new Mac.

If you are still hesitant in doing so, one option is to place the SSD in a drive caddy, which you can then attach to the USB port of your new Mac to access any files that you need. You can also retain this SSD/caddy as a backup.

I believe, most of the newest MacBook Pro notebooks do not allow for you to either remove & replace their internal drives or add a second one internally.
