Sync Issue

I am running the newest versions of iOS (10.3.2) and iTunes (12.6.1.25).  I have a brand new HP Spectre 360 PC (although I had this issue on an older PC as well) and an iPhone 6s that is just over a year old.  I do not use iTunes match or have an Apple Music subscription. I have my phone set not automatically sync with iTunes when plugged in.

I recently added a lot of music to my phone and I’m running into an issue with some of the songs not displaying properly on my iPhone – specifically in the artist view and sometimes in the album view.  I have attached some pictures that give an example of what I’m seeing on my phone.  Take a look at the picture titled “Aaliyah – Broken.”  I have added (7) Aaliyah songs to my iPhone, but only one (the song “I Miss You”) can be viewed on the artist view for Aaliyah (I’m going to Artists-->Aaliyah-->Unknown Album).  The other songs are there, but their names aren’t appearing.  They are listed as empty spaces.  If I select one of the empty spaces a song will play, but you don’t know what song will play until after you touch it and it starts playing.

I’ve included another example (see pictures “112 – Pic 1 – Broken” and “112 – Pic 2 – Broken”).  Of the (8) 112 songs I added, only (5) titles are visible.  Also attached is a picture of an artist (Alan Jackson) that is displaying correctly.  I can easily view and select all of songs I added for him.

So unfortunately this is happening for some but not all albums/artists.  I’m having a hard time determining why it happens for some but not others.  The only thing I’m noticing is on the “broken” pictures (112 & Aaliyah) you will see the red cloud icon but on the “correct” one (Alan Jackson) there is no cloud icon at all.

My guess/assumption is this is somehow caused by a conflict with the cloud and/or previous music that I’ve purchased in the iTunes store.  Music I've purchased in the iTunes store makes up less than 1% of my total music.  I’m pretty sure I don’t have music saved/stored in the cloud, but it’s possible I need to fix my settings to make sure there isn’t conflict somewhere.

Any help you can provide would be hugely appreciated!

Try the following all-purpose steps for dealing with erratic device or sync behaviour (including the troublesome grey dotted circles). They assume that all of the content you want on the device is in your library ready for restoring. If it isn't see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device first. I would also recommend you copy everything out of the camera roll if you haven't already.

  1. Backup device.
  2. Restore as a new device.
  3. Restore the backup you made earlier.

Use an encrypted backup (*) if you want to preserve passwords, Wi-Fi settings, web history and health data where appropriate. I also suggest syncing with a selection of playlists (unless you're using iCloud Music Library) rather than manually adding content as, if nothing else, the process above is easier to do if you ever have to go through it again.

(*) The downside with backup encryption is that if you forget the password when you need it again, which could be years later, you may need to invoke a workaround to turn off encryption as shown in Re: disable encrypted backups, which can only help if your device is in a state that can backup to iCloud.

Thanks for the response.  I've already backed up and restored from that backup - one of the first things I did.

Have you seen this particular issue before?  Were the pictures helpful to describe what is going on?

Did you restore as a new device though? Step 2. Is the one that ensures any media databases on the device really are rebuilt from scratch. The only other thing I can think of that might be responsible would be multiple tags for m3p files.

When you say "restore as a new device" you mean erase your phone (settings-->general-->reset-->erase all content and settings-->enter passcode-->tap erase twice) correct?  Then restore using iTunes from the backup made in step 1?

I'm surprised you don't think it has something to do with the cloud?  Is there any other reason there is a red cloud icon for all of the incorrect displays (the pictures above for 112 and Aaliyah) and there is no cloud icon when it displays correctly (the picture for Alan Jackson)?

Yep. That's what I meant. Although you can do it iTunes too.

I have cloud items that show correctly on my devices. I am however quite particular about the metadata in my tracks. Each has at minimum track name & no., artist, album artist, album, and embedded artwork. Sort values are used consistently so that no two different primary values are assigned the same sort value. Without comparing what is on your device with what is in your library it is hard to guess what the discrepancies are.

The cloud symbol against an artist or album would indicate that you have one more tracks from that artist or album that are not downloaded to your device, however I would then normally expect to see one or more cloud symbols in the track listing further down the screen. Since you don't have iTunes Match or Apple Music these would be related to purchased items.

I'm still having this issue - has anyone else noticed this before?  Just today I tried adding a new album from iTunes to my iPhone 6s (both itunes and phone are fully updated with the new releases) and none of the song titles are displaying on my phone, despite them showing up on iTunes as well as correctly in the "sort" tab.  See attached screen shot for what i'm seeing on my iPhone.

I've tried the restore as a new phone and frankly, this was happening on an old phone as well, just not as frequent.

Missing Song Titles On iPhone.jpg

Nope, never seen that before.

It's similar to what has happened with the others, although I believe this is the first time I've seen that an entire album of songs was invisible.  Typically at least one song title displays, if not more.  Attached is another example for 112 songs that I added from iTunes to the phone (not an album just random songs) - in this instance you can see that 5 of the 8 songs display and 3 are invisible.
