Adding an album to iTunes via Windows Explorer

Adding an album to iTunes via Windows Explorer locks both programs up for sometimes up to an hour.  Which also means the computer is locked up for that long.  You cannot minimize the Itunes window by 'windows key M' command.  The odd part is that if you wait out the 1/2 to 1 hour, the next album added takes less than a minute.  Any idea what is going on here??

Try right-clicking the iTunes shortcut and run as administrator to see if you get better performance.

Why are you adding an album this way? Where is the album coming from? an audio CD?

If it is from an audio CD then you should use iTunes to rip the CD directly, if you are sharing music between iTunes and WMP then a different approach may be far better.

No mention of WMP.

File > Add Folder to Library might be a better alternative to drag & drop, but either ought to work to add existing media files into iTunes.
