transfer hard drive

My iCloud account was hacked today and two of my Macs are locked with a remote pin that I did not set.  I needed a new computer anyway (both are 2011 models) so I have ordered one.  If I remove the hard drive from the old MBP, will I be able to access the data on it if I put it into an external housing?  I guess the question is:  Is the hard drive locked, or just the log in to the OS?  I hope this makes sense.
