Wake up Apple Pencil

I've just got a Pencil for my iPad Pro. When it works it's great. My problem is that I have to constantly plug the Pencil into the iPad to wake it up, even after a brief pause in using it (like 5 minutes). I still see it as connected in Bluetooth and the battery charge is visible on the iPad but the iPad isn't responsive to pen input unless I physically plug it in. I use the quick note-take function from the lock screen but this sort of removes "quick" from the equation. I have read that there is a need to plug the Pencil to the iPad after a reboot, flight mode etc (Use Apple Pencil with iPad Pro - Apple Support) but I haven't done any of that.

Nothing else is paired over BT to the iPad. Running iOS 11.0.3. Pencil and iPad are well-charged.

Common problem? Is this what to expect from the Pencil?
