no sound mute button greyed out?

no sound mute button is greyed out have restared and shut down computer several times

Is OS X Mavericks uptodate?

If it is not updated, use App store to update OS X.

If this does not help, try this.

Go step by step and test.

1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers

    Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones

    Make sure that Mute is not enabled.

2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.

    If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone

    in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.

    Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

3. Reset PRAM.  https://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405

4. Reset SMC.     https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

    Choose the method for:

    "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

    Audio Devices window

    Side Bar

    Click the Built-in Output.

    Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

I installed High Sierra and I have the same issue. Ive tried all of the above but no luck. It seems to be software related because i hear the chime when resetting the PRAM. Any help on this issue please?

i had the same problem.  Through research found that it was a sensor in the headphone jack.  I rebooted a few times; plugged headphones in and out a few times.  Blew in compressed air.  Then thought of seeing if some kind soul had written an app to take more control of sounds in a mac... found this https://staticz.com/soundcontrol/ ; installed the trial version  and it fixed it inimmediately.  Full disclosure: I'm an ordinary Joe user and in no way associated with the software company.  i will probably wind up paying the $10 for the full version if cannot find a free alternative ;-)
