Issues with text box

So, under my settings I have check my phone number not my email for both text messages and facetime. Well, I can't figure out why when I go to the text box the contacts email are only showing and not the phone number. I have to go to contacts and select message and text from there. Can anyone help me with this or should I just go to apple. Thank you.
