Macbook Flashing Question Mark backup migration...

Hi guys, I had the unfortunate luck of getting the infamous flashing question mark folder when I booted up my 2012 macbook pro. I have never used timemachine before, so I can't call backups. So i've been following a guide I found on apple website that told me how to backup my HDD contents to an external hard drive, as detailed here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204323

I've already followed it to reinstall the Mountain Lion OS on my external HD. But when I got to the migration assistant part to copy my files on HDD to external by selecting "From another disk", it can't find my HDD and is stuck on loop for "select the source".

What should I do to get past this stage? Thanks!

When booted into Recovery, can Disk Utility see the internal HD? If so, what happens when you run First Aid?

If you got the question mark on your MBP that started all this, it means that an OS couldn't be found to boot from on the internal HD. This could be due to a bad HD or HD cable. This would be the same reason Migration Assistant cannot "find" the internal HD. If DU cannot "see" the internal HD in DU, I would install the internal HD into an enclosure and see if it will boot the MBP. If it cannot, connect both external drives, boot from the one you installed ML on, and see if the other HD will even mount or be detected in DU.

If the original internal HD works to boot the MBP from in an external enclosure, then it is highly likely the HD cable is bad and needs to be replace. There have been quite a few 2012 13" MBPs having issues with that cable.

Unfortunately, Disk Utility in Recovery mode cannot see the internal HD. First, how does one install the internal HD into an enclosure?

Second, I only have one 1TB external drive, so it wouldn't be possible to do the second one.

That means the HD or cable has issues.

Remove the internal drive and install it in an external enclosure: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Replacement - iFixit

The internal in an external enclosure would be the second one, but if it's dead, this isn't going to work and the point is moot; you'd need a new internal HD.
