Why was I billed for downloading songs from App...

As a new iPhone user,I subscribed to Apple Music because I receive a mail that said I could have any music I wanted if I did. After subscription I downloaded 3 albums  expecting free downloads for my 1st 3 months and I was billed like a regular purchase. Why was I billed?
