10.13 upgrade killed hard drive

So I upgrade my Late 2012 Mac mini to 10.13 and something happened.  The machine booted fine after the upgrade, but then I rebooted and it would just power off.  I booted into recovery console and ran first aid and it says the the drive cannot be mounted back into the same place.  SO - I installed 10.13 onto an external drive and tried to run first aid on the internal disk - no go.  Error says permissions issue.  I also get this:

I have also run fsck:

$  fsck_hfs -r -d /dev/disk2

Unable to open block device /dev/disk2: Permission deniedjournal_replay(/dev/disk2) returned 13

** /dev/rdisk2 (NO WRITE)

Can't open /dev/rdisk2: Permission denied

and ran it again:

$ sudo fsck_hfs -r -d /dev/disk2

Password:

Unable to open block device /dev/disk2: Resource busyjournal_replay(/dev/disk2) returned 16

** /dev/rdisk2

  Using cacheBlockSize=32K cacheTotalBlock=32768 cacheSize=1048576K.

   Executing fsck_hfs (version hfs-407.1.3).

** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

   The volume name is Hera

** Checking extents overflow file.

** Checking catalog file.

** Rebuilding catalog B-tree.

BlockFindAll:  found 261944 blocks but needed 850048

   Disk full error

** The volume Hera could not be repaired.

  volume type is pure HFS+

  primary MDB is at block 0 0x00

  alternate MDB is at block 0 0x00

  primary VHB is at block 2 0x02

  alternate VHB is at block 1655336446 0x62aa6dfe

  sector size = 512 0x200

  VolumeObject flags = 0x07

  total sectors for volume = 1655336448 0x62aa6e00

  total sectors for embedded volume = 0 0x00

  CheckHFS returned 8, fsmodified = 0

Is this my only option?  Cripes, what a sh!$%y upgrade.
