MacBook Pro Retina, 15

I have had a MacBook Pro Retina since mid 2014.

In the last couple of weeks, it has starting freezing several times a day. Some interesting symptoms:

The keyboard freezes, all apps freeze, the clock freezes, yet I am still able to move the mouse around the screen.

Sometimes it does this while I am using the machine.

Often, it happens when I go to wake it up from sleep - I am able to put in my password and then it freezes right after I click the arrow to submit my password.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions. I have already tried resetting SMC and PRAM, upgrading to the latest release, hardware diagnostics, running etrecheck (it doesn't seem to find anything bad).

I should add that the freeze is always irrecoverable - I have to hold down the power button and turn off the mac and restart it.
