Does Apple Watch series 3 use phone data if you...

Hi,

I have recently purchased an Apple Watch series 3 with cellular capability and I am wondering what if I don't have a cellular plan active for the watch?  Will this reduce its functionality while connected to my phone or will it use the paired phones data connection automatically?

Before someone comments why didn't I buy the one without the cellular?  Because the model I wanted wasn't available as non-cellular and I may want to use the cellular in the future

The watch will work like a non cellular model if its own cell service is not active and will like non cellular watches use the paired iPhone's cellular service when near by to send messages, place calls etc...
