IMAC desk top mic woes

I have a desk top IMAC 27" mid 2010.  I bought an external mic to help with IMOVIE recordings.  It is not USB but 3.5 input

No matter what i do in system preferences, the microphone will not function.

Any input / ideas will help.  Thank you.
