External hard drive housing iTunes Library File...

I have been using a WD My Passport Ultra external hard drive for backing up my Mac. About 4 months ago I moved my iTunes Library File to that same drive to create space on my 256 MacBook Air. Now the external drive will not boot when I connect it to my Mac. iTunes gives me this message when I try to boot it:

The folder containing “iTunes Library” cannot be found, and is required. Please choose or create a new iTunes library.

Is there any way to recover my iTunes Library File (and my other backup files for that matter)?
