Why doesnt smart playlist sort for anything oth...
Smart playlist does not sort songs by anything other than artist.
iTunes 12.2 seems to default to the new Playlists view when new playlists are created. To change this, click on the dropdown at the top right of the iTunes window and select one of the other views:
I've just tried a quick experiment with Smart Playlists and found the following:
- If the Smart Playlist rules create a static (non-changing) playlist - for example, all songs from 1976, then the list appears to be created by artist and in alphabetical order (1st picture). But by clicking on the column headers will change the list to the order of that column instead (2nd picture).
- If a rule within the playlist causes the list to update, then new additions will be added to the end of the list, so the default order of the list will determined by the date added to the list. The first part of the list will be in artist alphabetical order, but new additions will be at the bottom of the list and not in alphabetical order.
- I think all newly created Smart Playlists will be in artist alphabetical order until additional songs are added by the rules. So in other words, even my 1976 list will lose its alphabetical order if I add more songs to my Library from 1976.
Here's a couple of screenshots:
1st, the default order of a non-changing Smart Playlist. Consequently, the songs are in artist order:
2nd, by clicking on the header "Name", the sort order of the same playlist is now by song title:
3rd, the rule of this Smart Playlist is songs played a long time ago. Look at the default sort order and you will think it is artist alphabetical order (until you look at line 17):
But if I click on the Artist header, the actual artist order is displayed and the additional artist that were at the end of the list now appear at the top:
What are you actually trying to achieve?
In iTunes playlists should retain the information about which column heading they were last sorted on, this may not be the same as the Play Order copied to any devices you may have. Play Order is the order shown if you click the heading of the left-most column of numbers. If you sort on some other column you can then right-click on the playlist name in the side bar and use Copy to Play Order.
In general lists should be sorted in ascending order, otherwise it is possible to look at say an album based view and find that iTunes starts playing tracks in reverse track order.

Thanks for your help. However I'm afraid that the topic starter meant that in iTunes 12.2 those header you're referring to are hidden by default: I personally don't have a clue on how to let them show up.
Besides, I noticed that smart playlists created before updating iTunes do retain their list view, with clickable headers, while new smart playlists don't. I just took an old one and duplicated it: the content is the same, but the view is different with apparently no way to switch to a different one.

Yup! That's right: I spotted that button, but ignored that it could help me out.
Thank you, I gave you points.
I found something which worked for me.
Right click the Smart Playlist and choose Edit Rules. The Limit To checkbox has a pulldown after 'selected by'. There are a bunch of options in there. Since I'm trying to hear my latest additions first, I changed this to 'most recently added'. Hit OK.
You may need to change the ascending / descending (first column in the music browser) to see the newest first, if you're trying to do what I did.
Synced my iPod, and was no longer stuck with alphabetical artists playlists!!
