Where is the checkbox for HandOff on my Mac?

I'm running 10.10.1 on my Mac (Bluetooth 4.3.1) and 8.1.1 on my iPhone 6. Up until yesterday, before 10.10.1 was installed, I was able to send and receive SMS messages from my Mac. Now I cannot. Allow HandOff is activated on my phone. And all the directions I've seen to activate it on my Mac says to look under System Preferences>General, scroll down to the bottom the screen where there will be a checkbox. There is no such checkbox. Has it moved? Thanks.

Unfortunately, even though when Apple announced Handoff and Continuity and said Bluetooth 4.X was required, not all Macs with Bluetooth 4+ are compatible with Handoff. If the checkbox in System Preferences -> General isn't there, your Mac isn't compatible with Handoff. You can confirm that by going to "About This Mac" under the Apple Menu and then selecting "System Report." Then select Bluetooth in the upper left and see if your Mac is Handoff compatible. I'm typing this reply on a 2011 MacBook Air with Bluetooth 4.3.1 and running Yosemite but it's not compatible with Handoff.

You still will be able to make and receive phone calls on your Mac as long as your iPhone is within Bluetooth range. You can set that up in the FaceTime preferences. That's part of Continuity.

I have seen some instructions + software on the Web to enable continuity on Macs with Bluetooth 4+ that otherwise aren't compatible with Handoff. You'll have to do a web search if that's something you're interested in learning about.

Wish I had better news.

I have an old MacBook Pro that does not have the checkbox, but it can send and receive SMS. Check if you have allowed text forwarding on your iPhone to your mac. Click on Settings, go to Messages and check if the text message forwarding has been activated. If the text message forwarding option is not there, reboot your iPhone.

That worked! When I updated my phone recently, it must have turned Message Forwarding off. Thanks for your help.

Had this issue on a mac mini with Mac osSierra 10.12.6 after upgrade.

No checkbox in the General system preference to turn handoff on.

Turns out there is an iMessage account in iMessage that needs to be set up and logged in with your Apple ID.

With the iMessage app active, there is a preference with a general and an account tab.

Select the account tab and login with your Apple ID.

After logging in to the iMessage account, handoff started working with text messages received on an iPhone  also being sent to the iMessage application on the Mac Mini.
