Apple Watch newest

I have had a problem with paying with Apple Pay through the watch. I when to subway to investigate what the problem was. Only pick subway because the have Apple Pay. On first attempt of paying with Apple Pay it did not work. The cashier switch a setting on her end (contacts). Not sure what was done but it worked. Can you provide some more info?
