macbook pro early 2011"color wheels" when scrol...

Macbook pro early 2011"color wheels" and hesitates when scrolling web pages or typing content into forms like this one. I did restart in safe mode earlier today but the issue returned after an hour or so. I have a 1 TB hard drive and it is approx. 75% free. Also 8 Gb of RAM. Not running an excessive number of windows at any given time. Fan will also come on under moderate web use. Have also recently run disk utility. I know that the battery is nearing its life end but doesn't seem like that would be an issue
