Apple Sim on new iPad Pro 9.7 not recognized by...

i received my new iPad Pro 9.7 today and selected AT&T for my cellular device. The request errored out and I called AT&T support,after being on the phone wiyh numerous people I was finally told that I would need to go to one of their stores to get a sum card. This doesn't seem right as I purchased the cellular iPad.

Same here.  Except I did have the SIM Card from my old iPad.  I popped it in and it works just fine.  But the iPad Pro came from AT&T with a notice that it had already been activated.  That was not the case.  I definitely needed the SIM card.  Calls to AT&T did not help.

This just actually happened to me too. Trying to consolidate my story, I received the iPad Pro from apple, and called AT&T to activate. They were registering a Samsung S7 for the IMEI... they were unable to register my device. So I contacted apple via Chat and they said that the IMEI registers correctly in apple data base and there was an issue with AT&Ts information. I called back AT&T technical service and had both them and a supervisor from apple assisting me on the call. The Apple rep (who may possibly be the best agent I have ever spoken with at any company) confirmed with the activation engineers that everything was ok on their end and that AT&T should be able to register. AT&T then said they were unable to escalate further, the device was showing as wifi only, and was an "S3" device (whatever that means). They then suggested I go to the store because they have more "access" then they do (crazy).

So I seceded and made a reservation to the AT&T store because it was my last hope before returning the device. Well... I get home - connect to the WIFI in my house (25 Mbps) and I was able to register through the iPad Pro and the apple SIM. Don't ask me how... I called the next day (today) and confirmed that everything was working, that my correct IMEI was in the system, and that it was fully functional. I would try it again to see if you can get it to register through the tablet (while connected to WIFI). Also - before I registered, the rep asked me to turn off "Find My iPad" and also the "iCloud Backup" features.

Sorry for the long post but hopefully this helps other people resolve their issues. I told both techs that they are going to be receiving more calls, because I am sure our incidents aren't isolated - and it may be an AT&T network issue with the IMEI database information not allowing the product to activate on the network. Good luck guys! Hope your iPads are set up soon!

And @DJPNC - I am sure that it worked for you... but I didn't need the AT&T SIM Card to complete. That was one of the big reasons that I purchased the iPad through Apple was that I wanted the international flexibility that was not available through the AT&T purchased iPad. Just adding that part in

Thanks Jgomze821.  I will try that with iCloud turned off.  I too am dissatisfied with my workaround.  I am glad to know that we really don't need the SIM card.  In my cellular settings the post paid AT&T data plan comes up as expired.  This iPad is replacing one I had on the same line.  But the iPad came with the correct phone number and was supposed to be pre-activated, so I don't know what's going on.

@DJPNC

So, did you purchase this iPad through Apple or AT&T? The reason that it comes as expired may be because you have the old SIM card in the slot. If it was deactivated in the network, it is reading that IMEI and not allowing you to activate (would be my guess). I would try taking it out, shutting down iCloud and Find My iPad, restarting, connecting to WIFI, and trying it again. Its not guaranteed, and it may be a network issue with AT&T still, but its worth a try! I sure hope it works!

@Jgomez821

Yeah I bought through AT&T.   I got it resolved however.  Turning off iCloud and find my iPad didn't work,  however I looked in the settings of the internal SIM account and I saw a Strange Cell Number other than the one I was supposed to use from my old iPad.  So I called AT&T back and the Tech seemed to know his stuff.  He said he'd have to put in a ticket to have the internal SIM cleared and the right number regenerated.  He called me back about an hour later, and after a restart of the iPad, I was connected without the external SIM.  I also made sure the right cellular number was associated with the account.  So glad!  I don't really mind the SIM being locked to a single carrier but I did NOT want to have to keep track of the AT&T SIM when I travel overseas.

I just went through this same issue with my IPad Pro 12.9 and thought I’d share the solution I found. I have AT&T and when trying to add data, it said SIM card expired. I could not add new data or manage the AT&T account I had on my previous iPad. I tried all of the suggestions found here and in other forums, but non worked. I then contacted AT&T and was told to go to: www.att.com/ipadlanding

Here you will need to enter your IMEI and ICCID (found in Settings, General, About). Next, set up a new account and select the plan you want. When you pay for your plan and reach the confirmation page, shut down your iPad and restart it. When you go back into Settings and Cellular Data, your SIM card should be active and you should be able to access the plan you just set up. This worked for me, hope it helps others!
