How do I open split screen view with an app tha...

If the app that I want to open in split screen is not in my dock, how do I open it using split screen? This happens to me a lot, and I hate having to go to the home page, open the second app I want so that it appears in my dock as a recently used app, returning to my original app, swiping up for the dock and then enabling split screen. I don’t understand what to do!

I loved being able to pull over from the right side of the screen to begin split screen, and swiping down from the second app to switch apps easily in split screen mode. Is it possible to easily switch between split screen apps in any way now?
