iOS 11 iPad dock

The dock in iOS 11on my iPad is driving me crazy!  The dock functions normally for a period of time, then all of a sudden after launching an app and returning to the home screen, ther dock will slide over to the left and leave behind a blank are to the very right.  This is not only unsightly but it throws me off when I try to select a new app to launch from the dock since everything slides over to the left and causes me to select the wrong app.  This happens MANY times per day.  Restarting my iPad fixes the issue for a short while and then it starts again.
