imac mid 2010 ram upgrade corsair issues
Ok so here it goes: RAM - https://www.corsair.com/en/memory-by-...m2a1333c9.html
TLDR: ordered same ram twice, not faulty, didn't work in mid 2010 imac (iMac11,2) after multiple tests and configurations
I purchased Corsair Apple ram 2x4gb sticks (CMSA8GX3M2A1333C9) for my mid 2010 imac (which apparently is the worst model for ram issues from what I have found in my research), these sticks meet the requirements for my imac (as far as I know based on the apple specs page) but I am having no luck.
1st purchase: I bought the RAM and installed it, immediately had a kernel panic when booting, white screen + apple logo... bam kernel panic. I then attempted placing the ram in different slots, and booting without the stock ram installed. When the corsair is alone it doesn't pass the white apple screen, when it was with the stock ram in different positions I was able to get it to boot into into a useable mode, and my imac detected the 12gb of ram (4gb stock +8gb new corsair). After a few hours of use my computer restarted, this happened every few hours ("your computer had to restart as a result of an issue" screen). Apple hardware test just froze, ram was re-seated multiple times, ram was moved in multiple slots and configurations. One apple hardware test yielded a memory error code 4MEM/9/400000000xb864f298. The result every time was an unhappy imac I contacted corsair and they recommended for me sending them the ram as it may be faulty. The tech's at Future Shop (where I purchased the ram) came to the same conclusion aka order new sticks.
2nd Purchase: Since the ram matches the specs for my imac (as far as I can tell, unless I missed something...) and it is thought to be faulty (by manufacturer and retailer) I returned 1st purchase and reordered the same ram. Guess what, no love round 2. Initial test caused a demon from **** sound (not the beeps) on initial startup. The AHT froze (again) without anything after multiple ram reseats and configurations, couldn't get it to work at all.
AHT with stock ram shows no issues so my conclusion is that the ram has something going on that is an issue. Question is what is causing this? the ram is apple certified, and matches the specs so why is corsair ram having so many issues? I think my only course of action is to order another brand of ram sadly corsair doesn't seem to cut it after 2 trials.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that may be the culprit please let me know
Thanks
UPDATE:
Performed SMC / PRAM/NRAM reset just in case
Test 1: 12gb (corsair 2x4gb toward screen, stock ram toward back)
Result: 3 beeps, black screen
Test 2:12gb (corsair 2x4gb toward back, stock ram toward screen)
Result: white screen + apple logo -> restart loop
Test 3: Boot into safe mode (test 2 ram configuration)
Results: booted into safe mode, detects 12gb ram, ran Rember RAM test, test results came back as 1gb tested, checked activity monitor, 10.89gb in use, only 1gb free (?).
Test 4: stock 4gb - back to stock, works fine as usual, wrote this update, sad panda
Conclusion: not happy with this corsair ram, install 8gb more for 12gb and apparently get -3gb
Exact same issue.
Just bought this: https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX35470
Here's my iMac to confirm specs:
Anyways, I've tried everything:
swapped out existing RAM with Corsair
added Corsair to exisiting RAM.
All channels are working - I've put existing RAM in all channels. Working fine.
I see your conclusion, but do not understand it .
What is the best option to update RAM for my iMac?
Please tell me there is a viable, reasonable option for me!
The two most recommended RAM vendors are OWC (macsales.com) and Crucial; personally, I buy all the RAM from OWC. I have a mid 2010 iMac and have added 2 x 4 GB to the stock 2 x 2 GB for a total of 12. Have not had any problem with it.
I've not come across too many posts mentioning Corsair, you might want to check a couple of links showing up in the right column under 'more like this'.
There were problems with the 2009 and 2010 models adding 16 GB of third party RAM, but adding OEM RAM was fine. It was also generally fine to have less than 16 GB, so I can only assume that the Corsair is not quite 'up to snuff' on the Mac (they are very finicky about their RAM). I only buy RAM from a vendor who guarantees the RAM to be compatible with a Mac. I'd suggest returning the Corsair and getting it from one of the above choices.
Just to add to Babowa's excellent summary, I have seen one or two mentions of Corsair that were not particularly encouraging. I use Crucial myself but both they and OWC have facilities to guide you and will recommend the correct memory package to meet whatever needs you describe to them. And both are principal recommendations in these forums.
There may be benefits buying from whichever company has a branch in your own geographical location insofar as Shipping charges, Local sales taxes, Exchange rates are concerned. Check out the basic memory costs and do your sums. Both are also fully guaranteed.
I've had this exact same issue. Same imac model/period (mid 2010, 11,2). However, I bought OWC ram specifically geared for this model.
It booted fine, worked fine, ram showed fine. However, periodically after initial install it would do a triple beep reboot. Nothing I did would fix it... reseated the ram, checked the slots, etc...
So, I ran a bunch of heavy duty ram tests to see if the memory was faulty. We're talking DAYS of memory tests here. Ram, showed perfectly fine, no faults.
Sent the ram back to OWC as faulty anyway, got two replacements, got the same exact problem. iMac just suddenly triple beeps and reboots. I then reset the PRAM and SMC... no luck, happened again. However, if I pull the OWC ram the machine runs fine and never triple beep reboots.
This whole thing has me exasperated.
My assumption is that it's when the machine tries to access some aspect of the additional ram slots it throws a fault. OR there's some problem between the updated ram everyone is using and the original ram shipped with the iMac... not something wrong with the ram itself, but more with the ability of the ram to integrate with modern ram, like it's too slow, etc.
Anyway, I would really love if some hardware nerd (more of a nerd than me anyway) could unwind this... so annoying. Did the contacts in the secondary ram slots oxidize over time or something? Is this a resistance issue? I didn't have ram in there for years, wonder if that's it...
