Can Mac OS X get infected by viruses?
Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro - 13 inch with 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 4 GB Memory and 320 GB Storage running OS X Yosemite ver 10.10.5 . When i tried to enter a website that i had not browsed for a very long time, it redirected mw to a web page which gave me a warning saying that my Mac OS X has been infected with 2 malware and 1 phishing/spyware. It was a message from "Mac-shield.com-secure-app.download" asking me to proceed immediately to scan for viruses else my system would get damaged. Is it from a trusted source? Can Mac OS X get infected by viruses?
A little help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Raaji
Effective defenses against malware and other threats
1. No.
2. No; while Windows viruses or other types of malware may be present on it, a website won’t be able to tell unless you manually upload a file there.

What you ask in your title is Can Macs get infect to virus?
First:
None have been detected, but yes; any device is susceptible to some kind of attack if one could be developed, fortunately for OS X none appear to have
So; OS X could get a virus if one was specifically developed for OS X but at this time none have been reported by any credible securities lab int the world. Macs can get adware and malware but those variants are far fewer to what is out for Windows. The general consensus here is that Anti-Virus products for Mac OS X appear to cause far more problems with OS X than anything the purport to fix, and using AV on a Mac to protect your Windows computers is not advised. Another issue is if you choose to run a OS X AV product they have never been faced with an actual attack and how effective those programs would be in detecting and removing the threat, Most if not all AV products for OS X do not detect the most basic adware or malware variants. Any Windows virus would not run on OS X.
The single best defense against comprising your mac is keep your system up-to-date with updates and securities patches from Apple and avoid websites that offer copyrighted material or pay-for services for free.

Thanks Niel. Is there a reliable antivirus software for Mac OS that i can download to check if my mac has been infected? or should i just ignore the warning?
That message was a scam, not a warning.

The pop up message is a scam, trying to trick you into downloading useless, un-needed software.
