Uncontrolled Updates to iOs and Apps

Why did Apple think it is a good idea to automatically update devices where they can become unusable due to a flaw in the software, configuration or usability.  Let us say that I have a major presentation using my iPad and overnight software is inserted without my knowledge or permission.  I now have a device that I have to reacquaint myself with (or fix) before the presentation.  Worse, what if I am depending on a function that has been deemed unnecessary and obsolete.  Getting these disruptions when I consciously  and deliberately update software is one thing.  In that situation, I allow time for adjustment and reengineering my life.  This current situation has removed all control from the users.  It is kind of like a spouse saying to the other, now that we are married, I can do anything to you that I desire and you have no say so. Maybe it is time for a divorce.
