iMessage Stops Updating on MacBook

iMessage on my MacBook Pro will not update during normal use. As in if I'm just sitting around using my computer, iMessage stops receiving messages on my computer. I still receive them on my phone as I'm doing this. I can carry on full conversations on my phone and my computer acts like iMessage is offline. The computer doesn't appear to be losing any kind of internet connection as I'm using safari during all of this. The only way to "wake" it up is to send a message from my computer. Once I do this it comes online and receives all the messages it missed since it last updated. Then it almost immediately goes back offline. I've gone through the settings and they seem fine so I'm seeing if this is an OS bug or if I'm missing something. This is also while using battery power but I've never seen a setting that would disable iMessage when on battery power so I'm not sure if thats relevant. Like I said, I'm actively using the computer so it's not going to sleep as a whole or anything.

I have a 2017 13" MacBook Pro running the most recent version of High Sierra.
