Apple's provider

I am a UK user.

Have long had the same service provider for my mobile which Apple supports.

When I acquired an iPad, I took out a contract with 3 so that I cld have cellular access.

Now, if I want an Apple 3 Watch I must have another contract, this time with EE.

Enough already.

With considerable regret, I have abandoned my Apple 3 Watch purchase plans.

Apple is v rich and simply does not require the commercial leverage obtained through an exclusive connectivity deal.

IMHO, what this manoeuvre represents is the company's deep contempt for its loyal customers.

I started with Apple with a MacPlus way back when and have since had many Apple products.

My latest Macbook is shagged and my iPad is ageing.  Time to look at Linux I think.

I can do without a wizzy watch and being dragooned by the world's most successful and perhaps also most arrogant consumer gizmo company.

Hi

If you would like to submit feedback to Apple, then you can do so here:

(You are not talking to Apple here - this is a user-based technical support community).

There are two versions of Apple Watch Series 3, both of which require a compatible model of iPhone (running the latest version iOS 11.x) in order to set up and use them:

  • Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) Apple Watch Series 3 does not offer built-in cellular capabilit.
    • Requires an iPhone 5s or newer model in conjunction with a service plan from any carrier.
  • Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) offers built-in cellular features, subject to having a service plan for the paired that specifically includes support for the watch, including the carrier activating the device on the plan.
    • Requires an iPhone 6 or newer model.

More information:

Apple advises that new carriers for the cellular-enabled models are being added all the time.

In the UK, Apple Support advises that there is / was no exclusivity deal with EE, but rather that other UK network operators were not in a position at launch, from a technical standpoint, to offer compatible service plans for Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular).

Users elsewhere report being advised (in online support chat) by Vodafone for example, that "Apple watch 3 cellular plans will be available from Vodafone on 3rd Nov 17. Vodafone official release on 27th Oct 17":

If you do not wish to sign up with EE, then you cannot currently use the built-in cellular feature with another UK network.

However, Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) can still be paired, set up and used for other features whilst skipping the steps to activate cellular. The cellular feature can then be enabled later, if and when you are using a compatible service plan on your iPhone, whether from EE or another UK carrier in due course.

You may wish to contact your preferred carrier to ask about their plans for offering service plans for your iPhone that include support for Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular).
