Time capsule erases partitions

Hopefully there is an obvious answer to this;

I'm trying to partition a new external HD to use with time capsule as well as to unload some files from my laptop.  I seem to be able to make the partitions, but whenever I try to select the disk to use with time capsule, I can only seem to select the whole HD, and the partitions disappear once I start the backup.

I am using

-- OSx El Capitan 10.11.6

-- laptop MacBook Pro retina 2012 (500GB storage which is almost used up)

-- Time capsule 2TB MD032LL/A from 2011 (approx 6 months older than the laptop)

-- New G-Technology USB 3.0 4TB External Hard Drive

The G drive is hooked up to the time capsule by USB.

My laptop is a laptop and thus wireless as much as possible.

Obviously some of these parts are getting to be a bit old and thus I want to back up to at least two drives. But 4TB is a bit excessive for a 500GB computer and I thought I could just partition it and save some of my uncrucial bulky stuff to it.

I tried following these instructions:

https://osxdaily.com/2013/05/01/use-single-hard-drive-time-machine-and-file-stora ge/

I seem to be able to erase and partition the G drive and name it what I like

Time capsule will see the G drive but not the partitions

And the partitions disappear once I try to get the time capsule to update

Any ideas?  Thanks.
