email sounds in new sierra
How do you now import incoming e-mail sound in new Sierra software ? Add sound no longer available in mail preferences
In typical Apple fashion. When they add and also take away. There used to be an option of add custom sounds to Apple mail alerts. For example, a custom .wav file is played when an email is received. That option is gone in Sierra. Really Apple Engineers?
From the Mail menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Then make a selection from the: New Messages Sound pop up menu.
And open System Preferences > Sound then select the Sound Effects tab.
Make sure: Play user interface sound effects is selected.

Thanks for your reply, but I have tried your suggestion and it still does not work. I still can not add any new sounds as I did in El Captain. New Messages is just what it says and you can not add any new sounds

You are absolutely correct, but I found a way. Go to the library in the Go menu. Then select the sound folder and add the the WAV file and reboot. The new sounds will now appear in the e-mail sounds folder. Then select the sound and you are set to go.
Accept starting in El Capitan Apple started using SIP to protect system folders , so SIP needs to be temporarily disabled to allow copying files to the "Sounds" folder. Directions are here : How to modify System Integrity Protection in El Capitan | Macworld
You do not need to disable SIP to copy into your home directory, only if you you are trying to alter anything within the System section, it's to protect system files after all.
The proposal that skpnsf has posted has always been the way I have added sound files to my apps, but it needs to be the Sounds folder within you Home directory and not under Macintosh HD/System/Library plus it needs to be a compatible file (I use wav) - you also should not need to reboot. Just open Mail after moving the file into ~/Library/Sounds (or if you do not have a Sounds folder just create one) and it should appear at the bottom of the "New message sound" section within mail Preferences.
I've just tested this works on my iMac so hopefully you also should be able to use the same method.
That's a good suggestion, unfortunately it doesn't work for me. The only way I can get a custom sound it by placing it in the System/Library/Sounds folder. Not sure why the option to pick a custom sound inside of Mail was removed in Sierra.
BINGO...thanks SiHancox :-)
In macOS Sierra I just went to ~/Library/Sounds and added my own sound files, no reboot necessary. Just make sure you restart Apple mail. Your custom sounds will be below the system sounds separated by a divider line. I changed my sound extensions to .aiff, I don't know. if that makes a difference or not.
I have not read far enough in the thread to know if this was already answered. I found that when you add a .aif or .wav file to the "Sounds" folder; User > Library > Sounds (NOT the Macintosh HD > Library > Sounds folder), your custom sound files will show up in Mail Preferences.
I have read solutions for putting my own mail alert sounds that I have used for many many years back, and they all suggest placing my sound files in the library/sounds folder, unfortunately my library no longer contains a sounds folder.
I am nearly 70 and had strokes so my brain isn't that good any longer so my days of digging around in system files are sadly over.
Since switching to Apple over ten years ago I have been very happy, only ever had 1 crash, but since the last couple of updates Apple has made life more difficult for me by changing stuff that didn't need changing, these young engineers unfortunately think all iMac users are computer scientists/programmers.
How does your suggestion get to play my own sounds?

Create a new folder in ~/Library in the usual manner, and name it Sounds. Then, follow pasadian's instructions.
Thanks my friend, now all I need is for Mail to actually play any sounds they stopped after the last Apple screwup I meant update just tried yet another test message with no luck, it seems I'm not the only one with this problem. If I hadn't spent over £2000 on this machine I'd be tempted back to the blue screen of death machines.
